Lot 1234
HUNNIC TRIBES, Alchon Huns. Uncertain king, mid-late 5th century. Drachm (Silver, 25 mm, 3.70 g). SAHI MATYA (in Brahmi) Bust of Sahi Matya with elongated skull to right, wearing earrings, pearl necklace and diadem with two ribbons and two small crescents; behind bust, club; before bust, chakra (sacred wheel). Rev. Incuse of obverse. Göbl 305. Vondrovec, Type 305. Extremely rare. Minor deposits, otherwise, good very fine.

From the collection of Dr. D. Löer, privately acquired from Ancient Coins Canada, ex Classical Numismatic Group E-Auction 218, 31 August 2011, 218.

The identity of this king is one of the remaining mysteries of the Alchon coinage. P. Tandon read the legend on the observe as SAHI LAKHANA, but K. Vondrovec offers a differing and more plausible reading as SAHI MATYA.
